a curious reader sent an email to us last week:

what’s up with the masthead and what the hell do you mean, “admit you’ve made a huge mistake and move on?” what’s your huge mistake? do you think your kids are mistakes? what?

well - on the night patrick and i first met we settled in at a bar called boat on smith street in brooklyn (read patrick’s version here and my version here).

fast forward seven months later - we returned to the boat for some post-dinner drinks on our first child-free weekend (since we’d gotten back together). while using the bathroom, i noticed that the inside of the door had been graffiti’d with a black sharpie marker. i pointed this out to patrick and we snapped couple of pictures for our own entertainment purposes.

a month later (on april fools day) we decided to use the image and the graffiti as our masthead because we figured that “we were together and then we weren’t and now we’re back together again AND we’re both parents to kids that are the same age” didn’t flow.

so the short answer is: our website’s masthead was penned by a wistful drunken stranger in the toilet at a bar.

The diagram fooled me into thinking this was about boating, or at least would contain a sea shanty or two. Speaking of which, why don’t you guys post sea shanties? Anyway, I didn’t appreciate having my eagerness for all things ship-related ($1 for a seaman joke) toyed with.
